Kinja'd!!!

I’ve had the boat at home for over a week now.

Things I’ve completed, as in totally finished, from my original to-do list: zero.

Things I’ve improved or repaired that weren’t on my list: easily a dozen

Things I’ve added to my list in the process: more than a dozen

I’m still net positive on things to do compared to where I started (as in, more added than completed), but hey, I really wanted to take another run through this boat since we’ve had it a couple years now. I firmly believe this is time well spent; you could never pay someone to do this kind of work (at least not all at once) because not only would it be hilariously expensive, there’s a lot of personalization, and things I’m putting exactly how I want them.

One fun item on my list is adding an ignition bypass switch. Yes, I’m literally hotwiring the boat and putting a switch panel hidden up under the dash for that purpose. The reason is, everything in this boat relies on a proprietary keypad to function. It still works, but there are plenty of reports of sketchy behavior over time, and this is 17 years old now. Yes, a 17 year old proprietary electronic part that is critical to the base functions of the boat like starting the engine. I do not want to be stranded on the lake in a thunderstorm one day because the keypad decided it has had enough, just then, and won’t start the engine. So there you have it. I’m not the first one to come up with this idea, but there isn’t exactly a youtube on how it’s done, so this is a fun project. I hope to never need it, but I’ll be happy it’s there.

But don’t worry, there are plenty of items in my head that aren’t even ON the list, so I’ll never really run out of things to do.

Onward.

When you are finished, I need you to rewire one of my switches. All the switches are off when tabbed up except one, it has to be tabbed down.

I don’t like it.

Good call on the Ignition pad. They are super c ool, but my buddy found himself at the boat ramp last summer, without a way to start his SAN 220 . loaded it back up and went home. Not fun.

.

On a related note, ours is in!!

I didn’t get to clean it as thoroughly as I wanted, but it usu ally sits on the lift long enough to where it needs another clean by the time it’s used a lot.

Nice work so far! A boat is always a compromise in how much work has to be done, how much work should be done and how much am I going to do before I put it back in the water and enjoy the dang thing.

We were on the lake every clear weekend from April to September growing up. We’ve always had a soft spot for pontoon boats and Boston Whalers. I’ve been eyeing a Boston Whaler or in-shore CC project for a while now. If you don’t care about having the latest and greatest there are some good hulls out there to build on.

Have added switches + starter button to every boat that has been mine. Especially easy since ours sits on a lift that takes a key to lower, if you cut the cables on the lift to drop my boat into the water it’s not going to matter if it needs a key you’re going to get it.

Here’s an interesting thought, well interesting to me anyway. If I finish in one day  a list of things I needed to do for work but am not really interested in, or if I finish an equally long list of things that I really wanted to do but are nonessential (read:  hobby), which list will leave me with the most sense of accomplishment and satisfaction at the end of the day?

BOAT stands for Break Out Another Thousand. I’ve found that the tasks never end. But that’s ok since I have something to do everyday. I got Sparrow in 2003. There are still items on the original list that have not been done a nd I live on her... My galley is a mix of tools, parts, and dishes. Thankfully, I don’t have anyone else living with me.

Oh that would be maddening. Can you not flip it around?

Man, the latest and greatest is like a different planet now. A new version of my boat would be $100k. But mine wasn’t the equivalent of $100k when it was new; more like half that. Things have gotten pretty crazy in the wakeboat market.

But to your point, there are so many excellent older boats you can build from. Whalers and Correct Crafts are good ones for sure. Pontoons are hard to beat also, for a place to hang out.

I’m more satisfied when I just make progress on my fun stuff haha

Although the only reason I’m up as late as I am, is I was banging out like 10 things I didn’t get to for my real job today. It was too nice out, so I went outside with the kids and also did a little on the boat.

Sounds cool living on one! I’ve never done that for more than a few days. I’d love to travel the world on my own small-ish sailboat, like, 35-40' maybe. Pretty unlikely to happen at this point, but you never know.

I never once took the key out of my old boat in 11 years. Like you said, if someone wants to steal it, you could untie it from our dock and literally swim away with it. It wouldn’t be very efficient, but you could tow it with literally any powered vessel and pop it on a trailer in the middle of the night.

I don’t have a code on my keypad, either - so this is just a backup to a completely unsecured, but potentially unreliable, starting method.

ha! Nice. It’s always an exciting day!

And... thank you for helping me justify the time spent making that bypass switch. I actually used 100% things I just had lying around, but it was quite a bit of time - probably over 2 hours in total. And I’m not quite done, I need to heat-shrink all my connectors.

That’s me too.  My rationale is there will still be work after sundown, but I can’t waste the day.

I don’t think so. It has four wires on tabbed connections on the back side. Think I’m going to just flip the order of all four. That hopefully does it.

Hmm, that might not do anything. If it’s just a simple on/off (single throw) switch, then swapping the wires won’t make any difference - the circuit is either complete or incomplete, determined by the switch position only.

tl/dr - take pictures

Yep. That and label the wires, 1,2,3,4.

Success! Flipped the switch. Working from home has it’s benfits.

Ha! Yes!

Indeed, I ran out before lunch and changed my boat’s fuel filter, cap and rotor. Got a handful of other things done like that yesterday. But now it’s pouring rain and it’s supposed to be 40F with winds 20-30mph tomorrow.
